Doctor Strange 2 features a major Avengers showdown that finally settles a “who’s stronger” debate that initially emerged with WandaVision.
Marvel’s new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has come to theaters, and it finally settles the debate about which Avenger is the strongest between Captain Marvel and the Scarlet Witch. While the debate first began in earnest with Marvel’s WandaVision, the new Doctor Strange sequel officially pits Wanda Maximoff against the powers of Captain Marvel (even if the wielder is different than expected). Engaging in a brutal showdown, there is indeed a definitive victor by the end of the new MCU film.
Based upon their respective exploits during the final battle of Avengers: Endgame, there was some debate in WandaVision about which Avenger was stronger: Scarlet Witch or Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel. S.W.O.R.D. agent Monica Rambeau claimed nobody came as close to killing Thanos as the Scarlet Witch did, and that she would have succeeded had the Mad Titan not fired on his own army to free himself from her power. However, FBI Agent Jimmy Woo argued that Captain Marvel came just as close with her impressive cosmic strength and power. While the debate was ultimately abandoned, the interaction does point out that both Avengers received their powers from Infinity Stones. Wanda’s powers were unlocked by the Mind Stone with Carol coming from the Space Stone. As such, it seemed as though they’d be fairly evenly matched.
Finally, Doctor Strange 2 answers the question of who would win thanks to the Scarlet Witch being corrupted by the Darkhold and her brutal battle in Doctor Strange 2 with members of the Illuminati who were standing in her way. Taking place on the alternate Earth-838, this universe features Monica’s mother Maria as Captain Marvel, presumably having received powers from the Space Stone instead of Carol Danvers. Wanda brutally murders each member of the Illuminati including the Inhuman king Black Bolt and Reed Richards’ Mr. Fantastic. While the Captain Marvel of Earth-838 put up the biggest fight, she too was killed after Wanda crushed her beneath a massive statue, confirming that the Scarlet Witch is indeed the more powerful being.
While the specific wielder was different, there was nothing to suggest that Maria Rambeau’s powers as Captain Marvel were any lesser or greater than the original Captain Marvel of Earth-616. However, the noteworthy wrinkle in the showdown was that the Earth-616 Scarlet Witch was dream walking, effectively puppeteering the Wanda of Earth-838 to fight the Illuminati standing in her way. While her powers didn’t seem reduced or increased either, the Scarlet Witch might have had the disadvantage of having to focus more to keep her hold over the alternate Wanda (and she still beat Captain Marvel).
While it didn’t occur in a way that was expected before Doctor Strange 2, the showdown between the Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel is impressive all the same. It also shows how much Wanda had been corrupted by the Darkhold in her desire to reunite with her lost children given her willingness to commit outright murder. Regardless, in the midst of a film that admittedly carries a multiverse full of questions, getting an answer about Scarlet Witch vs. Captain Marvel is pretty satisfying in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
