Witcher 3 DLC: There Can Be Only One Quest Guide

The Witcher 3 quest There Can Be Only One tasks players with demonstrating the five virtues to earn one of the best swords in the game, Aerondight.

In The Witcher 3, players will encounter the quest “There Can Be Only One” as part of the Blood and Wine DLC. Players will find this quest by examining a notice board at the Gran’place and reading the notice, “Test Yourself with the Trials of the Virtues.” Alternatively, players can unlock this Witcher 3 quest by eavesdropping on a conversation between Bors and Percival at the Tourney Grounds.

Once players have the quest in The Witcher 3 DLC unlocked, they should travel to Lac Celavy, a small lake with a circular island in the middle, located to the North of Beauclair. On the north side of the island, players will discover a set of five stones, one each representing the five chivalric virtues of Toussaint. Geralt will need to demonstrate each of these five virtues to proceed with the quest.

Geralt must demonstrate Compassion, Generosity, Honor, Valor, and Wisdom in The Witcher 3 to complete this quest. He will then be given the opportunity to fight a Hermit beneath the surface of the lake. If players win this fight, the Hermit will leave and return in his true form as the Lady of the Lake. She will gift Geralt the silver sword Aerondight. This relic sword will do increasing amounts of damage with each hit it lands, making it one of the best swords in The Witcher 3.

Players may find the “There Can Be Only One” quest in The Witcher 3 challenging if they do not know how to demonstrate the five virtues. To demonstrate Compassion, players may complete the main story quest “The Beast of Toussaint.” During this questline, players will fight the Shalemaar in the arena and be given a choice to determine its fate. To prove Compassion, Geralt must choose to spare the Shalemaar’s life. An alternative method to prove Compassion is to not return the stones to the art curator during the side quest, “Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Granite.” For a third option, if players inquire about the art curator’s daughter during the quest “Big Game Hunter,” they will have demonstrated their Compassion.

To prove their Generosity, players can head to the Main Square in Beauclair and receive a letter from a small child written by Yennefer or Triss in The Witcher 3. If the player chooses to give the child five crowns as a reward for the letter, it will prove generosity. Alternatively, players can purchase Syanna’s ribbon from the little girl for 500 crowns, or win it in a game of Gwent during the quest “Beyond Hill and Dale” to demonstrate the virtue of generosity.

For the virtue of Honor, players can win a mounted duel against the prince during the quest “The Warble of a Smitten Knight.” Another option for Honor is to return the stones to the art curator during the quest, “Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Granite.” Players should note that they can either prove Honor or Compassion during this quest depending on their choices, but they cannot prove both at the same time.

The virtue of Valor can be demonstrated during the side quest in The Witcher 3, “The Warble of a Smitten Knight,” by choosing to finish the tournament and win. Another option for Valor is to kill Dettlaff during the quest, “Tesham Mutna.” Finally, players can demonstrate the fifth virtue, Wisdom, by exploring the Wight’s Liar and choosing to lift the curse instead of attacking during the story quest, “La Cage Au Fou.” Alternatively, correctly choosing the location of Milton’s hideout during “The Beast of Toussaint” quest will demonstrate Geralt’s Wisdom.
