After contributing to the improvement of the Broncos’ outside linebackers, he caught the attention of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, taking on the role of defensive coordinator under Sean McVay for one impactful season.
In a highly sought-after move, Staley became the head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of the 2021 NFL season, succeeding Anthony Lynn. Tasked with leading a formidable offensive team boasting talents like Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen, and Austin Ekeler, Staley guided the Chargers to a promising first season, finishing 9-8 and narrowly missing a playoff berth.
Despite facing criticism for some questionable decisions in key games, Staley continued into the 2022 season, where the Chargers improved their regular-season record to 10-7, securing a wild card round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Chargers suffered a heartbreaking loss, surrendering a 27-0 lead to ultimately fall 31-30 with a last-second field goal.
The Chargers’ 2023 season has proven challenging, opening with a 5-8 record and increasing calls for Staley’s job security. The pressure mounts as expectations rise for him to reverse the team’s fortunes in the remaining games.
