A surprising encounter with a rhea left a Storm driver in astonishment after the large, flightless bird darted across Main Street in Repton, Derbyshire, on a Sunday afternoon.

Robert Jay, a local window cleaner, and his wife were driving through the village when the unexpected spectacle unfolded before them. Captured on video by Mrs. Jay, the incident was shared on social media with Mr. Jay commenting, “That’s the biggest chicken I’ve ever seen.”
Reflecting on the incident in an interview with the , Mr. Jay expressed his initial shock, stating, “We were just on our way back from shopping and it just jumped out in front of the car. It was shock at first. I didn’t expect to see something like that. I thought it was an emu. It made our day.”
The rhea’s escapade was traced back to a farm in Repton, where it had made its break through an inadvertently left-open gate, as explained by a local farmer. Fortunately, the bird was safely reunited with its rightful owner and received a clean bill of health from veterinarians after being examined.
