In December, Kirschman aims to participate in a 70.3 Ironman event in Florida, a remarkable feat given his circumstances. Tracking his training progress online, he’s determined to showcase resilience in the face of adversity.

Two years ago, what Kirschman initially believed to be kidney stones turned out to be a sizable tumor nestled in his abdomen. This gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a rare form of cancer, proved resistant to conventional chemotherapy treatments, leaving him with limited options.

Undergoing surgery in February 2023 to excise the tumor initially brought hope. However, a subsequent follow-up appointment in November 2023 revealed disheartening news – multiple spots had appeared on Kirschman’s liver, signaling a recurrence.

The medication intended to prevent such a relapse had ceased its efficacy, leaving Kirschman grappling with the harsh reality of an incurable condition. While alternative treatments exist, they offer only temporary reprieve, with the looming specter of treatment resistance and eventual depletion.

Amidst his ordeal, Life Raft Group Canada emerged as a beacon of support, facilitating Kirschman’s inclusion in a drug trial program aimed at managing his cancer progression. Offering invaluable guidance and resources, the organization equipped him with essential knowledge to navigate the challenges ahead.

Despite the daunting road ahead, Kirschman remains undeterred, leveraging his past involvement in triathlons to spotlight the cause close to his heart. By participating in the grueling 1.9-kilometer swim, 91-kilometer bike ride, and half marathon, he seeks to raise both awareness and funds for Life Raft Group Canada.

Documenting his training journey on social media platforms, Kirschman’s efforts have struck a chord, surpassing his initial fundraising goal and rallying widespread support. Not one to be sidelined by the side effects of treatment, he persists with unwavering determination, inspiring others with his resilience.

In tandem with his athletic endeavors, plans are underway for a fundraising bike ride in Waskesiu, Sask., further bolstering Kirschman’s commitment to the cause.

David Josephy, president of Life Raft Group Canada, underscores the organization’s mission to provide solace and advocacy for individuals grappling with GIST. With a focus on raising awareness and fostering community support, every dollar raised contributes to vital patient support services and research initiatives.

As Kirschman continues his arduous journey, his unwavering spirit serves as a beacon of hope, driving forward the quest for better outcomes and increased awareness in the fight against rare cancers.
