“Canadian Golfer Joey Savoie’s Strategic Success: A Tied Fourth Finish in Bupa Championship”
Canada’s Joey Savoie approached the Bupa Championship with a clear strategy: keep the driver tucked away. This tactic proved successful for Savoie, hailing from La Prairie, Que., as he clinched a tied fourth position on Sunday in the opening event of the PGA Tour Americas season. Savoie emphasized that the conservative approach was vital on the tight fairways of PGA Riviera Maya in Tulum, Mexico.

“Jungle on both sides on every hole, water on every hole, pretty much, tough greens, fast greens, and windy,” remarked Savoie. “So it’s a mental test and a golf test second. I think it’s an overall test of endurance so I think my game plan is really well suited for that golf course.”
The event saw Clay Feagler emerge victorious after a playoff, while Savoie finished tied for fourth at 2-under overall. Naturally, he finds himself in the same position in the Fortinet Cup standings after the first event.
Reflecting on his early-season success, Savoie admitted uncertainty about its impact going forward. “I guess I’ll tell you after the rest of the year,” he quipped. “I’ve had some good starts to the season, I’ve had some bad ones. For me, the goal is to build on it, not let myself relax after that start. I want to keep my foot on the gas.”
Savoie now prepares for the Totalplay Championship at Atlas Country Club in Guadalajara, Mexico. Among the 14 Canadians in the field, he is eager to continue his momentum in the second event of the PGA Tour Americas’ Latin American swing.
With the merger of the Latinoamerica Tour and the Canadian Tour forming the PGA Tour Americas, Savoie acknowledges some adjustments in the schedule. “Schedule-wise, it might be a little easier,” he noted. “The big difference is the number of events in Latino countries. There’s just no more overlapping.”
Meanwhile, on the PGA Tour, Mackenzie Hughes leads the Canadian contingent at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, joined by Adam Svensson, Ben Silverman, Taylor Pendrith, and Roger Sloan. Calgary’s Stephen Ames and Brights Grove’s Mike Weir are set for The Galleri Classic on the Champions Tour, while Aaron Cockerill represents Canada at the Hero Indian Open on the DP World Tour. Brooke Henderson, Savannah Grewal, and Maude-Aimee Leblanc feature on the LPGA Tour, with Alena Sharp receiving a tournament invite.
